Organizing for a New Baby: Combining Closets

Introduction

When this sweet Lake Norman family found out baby #3 was on the way, they knew it was time to make space and fast. With two active little boys already ruling the roost, the arrival of a new baby meant rearranging more than just the crib. We stepped in to help prep a peaceful, organized nursery and combine two busy boys into one shared wardrobe that could handle the daily tornado of clothes and hand-me-downs.

The Goals

This project had two parts, both equally important (and equally fun to tackle):

• Create a calming, fully functional nursery for the newest little one; complete with zones for clothes, diapers, and baby gear.
• Combine the two boys’ closets into one easy-to-manage space that keeps the peace and simplifies their daily routine

And of course; make it look good while doing it.

Our Process

We broke this project into two distinct but equally important zones—each designed with intention and functionality in mind.

The boys’ shared closet was all about maximizing space and minimizing chaos. We edited down their wardrobes to include only what actually fits and gets worn. Each child now has their own side of closet which included 3 dresser drawers making daily routines smoother and to allow the boys a little more independence. We then created a zone for clothes they can grow into and clothes that need to be passed down. The end result? A setup that empowers the boys to dress themselves—and even (miraculously) put their laundry away.

For the nursery closet, we began by decluttering old baby gear and outgrown items from earlier stages. We brought in a new dresser for all the baby essentials.

The After

The result is a serene, grab-and-go nursery setup perfect for midnight diaper changes, and a shared boys’ closet that’s functional, fair, and frustration-free. With systems designed to grow alongside the kids, there’s no need for constant overhauls—just simple, sustainable order. Most importantly, it brought peace of mind to a very busy (and very smart) mama.

• Drawer Dividers – We used white drawer dividers and labeled each section to give the drawers some structure and create zones for their clothes.

• Hat Organizer – They may not have many hats right now but as they get older; their collection will grow which is why we brought in a hat organizer that could go directly on their dresser. They can even add another one as they get older and they can each have their own.

• Kiva Bins – We needed some bins up top so she could use them for sheets and hand me downs. We used these Kiva bins from the Container store and they worked out perfect.
